Why Write A Book About Friendship?
Why now? Why write a book that is focused upon friendship? This is certainly a topic that has been addressed in a wide array of venues by authors more accomplished, more insightful than I. What led me to write Building A Christian Community Of Friends? I could share with you several obvious reasons:
The topic of friendship is most interesting.
Friendship is something that every person desires and needs.
All of this is true, but the reason this book was written was to present the whole concept of friendship in the context of how to build a Christian community of friends. As I have met with a variety of people over the years and have studied the Bible, I have come to discover some significant truths concerning Christian friendship:
1. Biblical friendship is an art—it does not come naturally as some would assume. It is something that must be learned.
2. There needs to be wisdom in the pursuit of building authentic relationships.
3. There is great potential for experiencing meaningful Christian friendships. On the other hand, the process of building relationships is fraught with dangerous snares of unmet expectations and heartbreak.
4. Trust is huge.
5. Each friendship has its own unique blessings and special challenges.
6. Christian friendship is God’s design for building a sense of community, of building up the Body of Christ, in the local church.
7. God’s way of building community is not through the formation of trendy “clicks.” God’s way is through the drawing together of diverse believers to form a spiritual bond of friendship.
By no means is this study an exhaustive exposition on the topic of Christian friendship. There are others who have accomplished much more than I and I applaud them. It has been my task and great privilege to meet with God as I studied the Scriptures. It has been my joy to have sensed the Lord’s presence and blessing as I learned from His Word.
It is my earnest desire that you, the reader, will learn for yourself the importance of Building A Christian Community Of Friends.
